This series is not a direct comparison of these monochrome conversion filters, but I hope it gives you an idea of the range of expression you may be able to get with Snapseed, Alt Photo, and iPhoto.

In no particular order, these include the Tech Pan film simulator from Alien Skin, the Snapseed “Film” simulation, and the iPhoto B+W conversion slider at the highest contrast setting near the left side of the slider range, plus the original color version for reference.

I am generally finding iPhoto’s controls to be easiest to use for tuning in the look that I want quickly. Alien Skin has some excellent film simulations, and the choice of luminosity, contrast and grain sliders in Snapseed is starting to grow on me.
